Synthography (AI)
With more than 24 years in professional digital photography, I expanded my practice into synthography and hybrid photography. For me, this is not about generating images, but about building them — carefully, deliberately, and with a strong connection to real people.
For this, I use the principle of remixing. My own photography forms the basis for the style I present. This is either learned through training or supported by references. It’s important to know that a good AI-generated piece of work isn’t a quick job and can be just as time-consuming as a photo shoot.
I work with real individuals, often either photographed in the studio under thoughtfully designed light, and extend these photographs with AI-generated or synthetic environments – otherwise with their digital twins. The human presence remains central. Light, perspective, and atmosphere are treated with the same care as in traditional photography, so the final images feel coherent, believable, and grounded.
When working with identifiable people, their rights and representation are part of the process from the very beginning. Depending on the project, I collaborate with agencies such as Prompt me Please!, a digital media brand of Brüderchen & Schwesterchen modeling agency in Düsseldorf, to ensure professional and transparent frameworks. A model need to be paid when we use their likeness.
Objects are usually introduced through photographic material and adapted with care. Each image is developed over time, refined step by step, until it feels right — not perfect in a technical sense, but convincingly real.
This hybrid approach allows visual stories to emerge that would be difficult, impractical, or unsustainable to create through photography alone.
